FAQ: What are Those Measurements?

When Dryer Vent Wizard comes to inspect and clean your dryer vents, there’s a lot going on. We aren’t just cleaning all that lint out, and one of our most frequently asked questions during inspections is, “What are you measuring and why?”. What measurements are these? They’re the measurements we take when we’re doing the diagnostic inspection that assesses back pressure and airflow. So, here’s the answer to the question of what are we measuring and why.
What is back pressure, and why are we measuring it? Back pressure, or high static pressure, in the vents reduces the amount of air that is capable of escaping the dryer during each cycle of drying. We measure this, because if air can’t escape anymore, your dryer will suffer from decreased efficiency. Not only that but your clothes will suffer from more than just the normal wear and tear that occurs during the drying cycle. Neither of those things is something you want to contend with!
As for air flow, this is important to assess because if airflow is restricted it can also cause issues with your dryer and dryer vents. There are plenty of ways that airflow can become restricted for several reasons, including (but not limited to) improper vent routing or connections, bird nests being built in the vents, or lint buildup. And when this restriction occurs it can cause a host of issues, including an increase in the amount of lint building up in the line (which increases the risk of a dryer fire) and can cause longer drying times. This is why it’s critical to take the time to measure this.
We take these measurements using specialized equipment and, in doing so, we are able to better service your dryer so it’s more efficient and safer. Because the more efficient your dryer is the longer it will be before you have to replace it, and the safer your dryer is, the safer you and your family will be.
